Why Vanity Fair’s ‘Unforgiving’ Lighting Exposed the Stars – and How I Make You Shine Differently
I was recently asked by the Daily Mail (March 2026) to comment on the unforgiving red carpet lights seen at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty.
When the photographs began circulating, many people noticed the same thing – even some of the most photographed women in the world looked tired, shiny, lined, or simply unlike themselves.
These are women with access to exceptional skincare, makeup artists, stylists and fitness experts. Yet under the wrong lighting, even A-listers can appear harshly exposed.
I explained that the reason is surprisingly simple: high-definition cameras combined with hard overhead lighting and little or no diffusion will reveal every texture, crease and shine point on the face. It is not about beauty – it is about physics.
This is something I think about every day in my work as a luxury portrait studio London women trust when they want to look elegant, natural and radiant.
My approach is entirely different.
Rather than light that scrutinises, I create portraits with light that feels real but kind – carefully tailored to flatter each woman’s features, confidence and personality.

The Problem with Harsh Lighting in Portrait Photography
Lighting can transform how someone looks more dramatically than makeup, styling or even camera quality.
At the Vanity Fair event, the issue was not the women being photographed – it was the setup. High, direct lighting from above creates shadows beneath the eyes, around the nose, under the chin and into every natural line of the face. Think of every wrinkle as shadow casted by the skin creases. With high-definition cameras capturing every detail, the result can feel startlingly severe.
Picture the difference between looking in a bathroom mirror under fluorescent lighting versus catching your reflection in soft evening light. Same face, entirely different experience.
Hard top lighting tends to:
- Deepen lines and wrinkles
- Emphasise texture and pores
- Increase shine on the skin
- Flatten features rather than sculpt them softly
- Create shadows that make someone look tired
It is one of the biggest reasons women tell me:
- “I always look older in photos.”
- “I hate pictures taken at events.”
- “I look awful on camera.”
The truth is that many bad photos are a result of bad lighting.
Photography should never feel punishing.
When clients come to my studio, many arrive believing they are “not photogenic.” In reality, they can very much be photographed in environments that were rushed, badly lit, in bad angles and possibly with inappropriate equipment (the phone cameras are convenient but far from productive for creating magical shots.)
As a best portrait photographer London clients seek out for natural, flattering imagery, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is helping women realise the issue was never their face – it was the light.
Solution to Bad Lighting: Carefully Crafted Studio Photography Lighting that Enhance
In my studio, lighting is never generic.
Every face responds differently to light. Bone structure, skin tone, eye shape, height, hair colour and confidence levels all play a part. That is why I design the lighting around the person in front of me rather than forcing everyone into the same setup.
My goal is simple: to create photographs that look like you on your best day.
1. Soft Diffused Light
I use large diffusion sources that wrap light gently across the face. This softens transitions, smooths texture naturally and creates a luminous finish without looking artificial.
2. Directional Sculpting
Soft light does not mean flat light. I carefully position light to add subtle definition to your facial features, keeping everything elegant and believable.
3. Fill Light for Balance
Where needed, I add controlled fill light to balance darkness and shadows.
4. Personal Angles and Height Adjustments
Lighting aside, angles and postures are key for a best and skilled portrait photographer. I guide posture, chin position, shoulder line and body angle throughout the session so every frame feels intentional.

Clients’ Portrait Experience in my Portrait Photography Studio
Clients often tell me they expected to feel nervous, but instead felt looked after.
That matters.
A luxury portrait session should feel calm, personal and uplifting. You are never rushed. We review what suits you, what you love, and how you want to be seen. The final result is polished, confident imagery that still feels unmistakably like you.
That is why women searching for a luxury portrait studio London experience often come to me wanting more than photographs – they want to feel beautiful in front of the camera again.
