Venice, Italy, often referred to as the “City of Canals” or the “Floating City,” has long been a dream destination for travellers and lovers. Its unique geography, surrounded by water and accessible only by boat, gives it a sense of isolation and escapism. There is this feeling of being in a separate world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This feeling can very much heighten the sense of romance and intimacy. It is my job being a portrait photographer to breathe this sense of escapism, romance and intimacy into your your stunning portrait photos!
Venice as a City of Love
Venice is also known as the “City of Romance” and “City of Love”. Its reputation as a romantic destination has been nurtured through literature, art. The city has inspired countless artists, writers, and musicians throughout history to create works of love and passion. Famous stories like Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and the operatic masterpiece “La Traviata” contribute to Venice’s romantic legacy.

Jaw dropping scenery is everywhere around the corner
Being a portrait photographer, my eyes always search for naturally beautiful photography backdrops everywhere I go. Venice is a city not short of these backdrops in any sense. You don’t necessarily have to visit the famous touristy sites for the best portrait photography background. There are at every other corner you turn.
For me the charm of the scenery lies at the labyrinthine layout connected by countless streams and canals. These water ways are romantically connected by footbridges that are all shaped and decorated differently. I couldn’t help visualising love stories as I step onto those cobbled stone pathed bridges, witnessing the reflections of boats and passer-by in the heart of those stories.
Narrow alleyways and expanse of water
The city’s charm also comes from the narrow alleyways, walled by houses painted in a rich palette of colours ranging from terracotta yellow to turquoise blue. These alleyways often take the explorers to idealistic squares. They are homes of grand architecture buildings connecting today to the historical Gothic, Renaissance or Baroque era.
Then there is the proximity of the water. Rather than having the waterway as a remote background, they are constantly at the bottom of our feet, inviting and tempting enough for one to dip the foot right in. For me it is a perfecting romantic setting for a dream photo shoot, as I pose my subjects right at the edge of water, having land and water connected together in the imageries’ backdrop.
Gorgeous Venetian interior decoration
Not only are Venetian architecture mesmerising from the exterior – they are also unique and grand from the interior. Venetian interior decoration style is renowned for its luxurious ambiance. Often you will find them in a rich colour palette featuring deep jewel tones like ruby red and gold. There will be presence of lavish fabrics like velvet and silk for upholstery, drapery ornate details with intricate stucco work and gilded mouldings. You may find Venetian plaster creating a marble-like finish on walls. The rooms will be filled with antique furniture pieces with opulent wood carvings and rich finishes. These are all settings that will add colours and grandeur to your dream portrait, and possibly boudoir, photography session.
